Der Hallesche Shakespeare-Forscher legt bereits 1855, also ein Jahr nach dem Erscheinen von Booles Laws of Thought, eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der Algebra der Logik vor. Ulrici ist eine Hauptfigur der philosophischen Debatte über die sogenannte logische Frage, in welcher es um eine Neubestimmung des Verhältnisses von formaler Logik und den anderen philosophischen Teildisziplinen geht. Die Debatten gelten der Überwindung der Hegelschen Gleichsetzung von Logik und Metaphysik.

Die 393 Nummern umfassende Bibliographie der Schriften Ulricis (S. 114-161) dokumentiert dessen ausgiebige Beschäftigung mit der erkenntnistheoretisch-logischen Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts und vermittelt einen Eindruck von der Breite der damaligen Diskussion um Logik.

Peckhaus tries to show the confrontation of Ulrici with the English algebra of logic in a wider context: namely in the context of contemporary discussions of logic in Germany. – It should be noted finally that the book under review was published with great accuracy. It is a valuable contribution to the history of logic of the nineteenth century showing one of ist rather unknown episods.
